How to apply for membership (including reinstatement)

Membership of the AusIMM is available to professionals and practitioners in the resources industry and in government, academia, research organisations and associated industries.

Eligibility requirements vary according to the categories or grades of membership.

The first step in applying for AusIMM membership is deciding which grade of membership is right for you.

When submitting an application, depending on the grade you may need to provide:

  • Personal details
    Including name, email address and date of birth
  • Proof of identity
    Passport photo page, current driver's license or copy of your birth certificate
  • Certified Degree
  • Verification of professional experience (Fellow applicants only)
  • Current curriculum vitae or resume
  • Proof of enrolment (Students only)
  • Payment
    The online Application fee is $55 for Member and Associate. The rate of subscription for each grade can be found here.

Membership Grades

Fellow

This is the most senior level of professional membership.

  • Applicants generally must have a relevant tertiary degree
  • A minimum of ten years relevant industry experience since graduation.
  • Occupied a position of senior responsibility for at least five years.
  • Sponsors-Three Fellows or two Fellows and one Member of the AusIMM.

Member

This is the main professional grade of AusIMM membership

  • A relevant tertiary degree
  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience.

Associate

Associate membership is available to recent graduates or to individuals without degree qualifications working in the minerals and associated industries, who are not yet eligible for the grade of Member.


Students

All first time undergraduate university students are encouraged to join the AusIMM at the grade of Student and must provide proof of enrolment in a tertiary program.

Applicants who already fulfil the requirements of a higher grade of membership are ineligible for admission to this grade.


Visiting Membership

The AusIMM has a mutual recognition agreement that allows members of the following institutes or societies to be recognised as a visiting member of the AusIMM:

  • Canadian Institute of Mining (CIM)
  • The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3)
  • Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP)
  • Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM)
  • Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Engineering (SME)

Under visiting membership, a member of these institutes or societies who is living in Australasia and is not a member of the AusIMM is given access to AusIMM member benefits for up to 12 months without having to separately join.
